Dear Musical Directors,
Welcome to the transformative world of "Stand Up & Speak Out," an anti-bullying musical born from a vision to inspire change. In 2015 I embarked on this journey by crafting the first song, "Names," and presenting the concept to the Commission on Women, Children, and Seniors. Six months later, the musical came to life, initially as a showcase featuring cast members who had faced bullying.
Through revisions and collaborations, the Ivoryton Playhouse joined forces, leading to public and educational premieres. The musical reached significant milestones, performing at the Connecticut State Capitol, showcasing songs at the United Nations, and presenting a concert at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The Katherine Hepburn Theatre hosted the show in 2018, followed by a regional tour to schools in 2019.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of the musical's message became even more evident. Central Connecticut University recognized this and created a comprehensive 49-page educational activity guide, providing a valuable resource for educators, administrators, and students. This guide can be viewed at here.
"Stand Up & Speak Out" is now a passion project embraced by students, teachers, and directors alike. I am immensely proud and honored to share this impactful project with the world. Remember, in the face of adversity, never give up, and let us collectively bring on tomorrow!
Warm regards,
Jill Nesi, Creator, Producer, Songwriter
